Frequently Asked Questions

How much does it cost to adopt ?

The adoption fee varies depending on a variety of factors including age, breed, and medical needs. Each dog has their adoption fee listed in their individual profile. In the case of bonded pairs, the adoption fee is the combined total of the fees listed in each dog’s individual profile.

How do I adopt?

Please fill out an adoption application and someone from RMG will contact you. A visit with the prospective dog will be arranged, and usually a home visit, unless an RMG staff person can recommend you. An application does not guarantee adoption of that dog.

How long does the whole process take?

We are all volunteers so we work as quickly as we can. We are always pressured for time due to the nature of rescue work (time can be life or death to a shelter dog). The process should not take longer than a few days, except during periods of high demand (i.e. when new puppies listed for adoption)

Are you allowed to adopt if you live in an apartment?

Of course, provided you have landlord approval. We do verify and adhere to pet policies in all cases where the potential adopter lives in a rental property. We do our best to match the right dog to the environment it needs!

Do I have to have a fenced in yard to adopt?

No. Many of our adopters don’t have yards and actually spend more time with their dogs leash walking - it’s the best way to bond with your dog! Please think hard about your own activity level to match how much time you have to spend with your dog and the dog's exercise needs. Please understand, though, that certain dogs may require a fenced yard based on their individual needs (high energy, poor leash skills, etc). We put forth every effort to identify those needs within the dog’s individual profile.

I have never had a dog before, can I still adopt?

Absolutely! Everyone has to start somewhere! Our adoption team will help guide you towards a dog that is suitable for a first time pet owner. We do not allow for the adoption of puppies without previous experience, though.

What happens if the dog I want is already adopted?

We will work to help you find another in need - unfortunately the supply is endless!

What do I do if my dog is not working out?

We hope that you will try to work with a trainer or your vet to see if there is a medical problem or other solution. If you cannot solve the problem, please call us and the dog will be returned to us. Please do not give the dog away or take it to a shelter. Adoption fees are not refundable because 100% of your fee goes to medical care, microchipping, and other needs for each dog.

How do I get in touch with someone from RMG?

The team member that contacts you about adoption will give you contact information. Please text or e-mail that team member first. Please bear in mind that none of our team receives a salary or any remuneration for their work. All are volunteers who do this work without being reimbursed for their expenses or their time. We kindly ask that you please take that into consideration and call between 9 a.m. and 6 p.m. If your message is not returned within 24 hours, please contact marybeth@rescuemega.org

Do you consider out of state adoptions?

At this time, preference is given to qualified adopters living within Metro Atlanta. However, on rare occasions, highly qualified adopters may be considered for dogs that have specific needs unable to be met by local adopters

How do I get help surrendering a dog to your group?

Our mission is to rescue the forgotten dogs of Georgia. We will do whatever we can to save any dog that needs help, however our foster homes do remain quite full most of the time. If we are unable to find space for the dog within our program, we can help by sharing information within our rescue network.

I am really interested in a particular dog, but I do not meet the listed adoption requirements for him/her. Can I still adopt?

Our volunteers spend a great amount of time getting to know each dog prior to posting them for adoption and our goal is to insure the best possible fit for all involved. As such, adoption requirements listed for individual dogs are strict. With adoption being a lifelong commitment, it is not fair to the adopter or the dog to settle for anything less than a perfect match.
